Oh Il-nam, also known as Player 001, is a pivotal character in the South Korean survival drama television series, Squid Game. He appears as an elderly man with a brain tumor, seemingly participating in the deadly games out of desperation for financial relief and a renewed sense of purpose.

Initially portrayed as a vulnerable and sympathetic figure, Il-nam forms a bond with the protagonist, Seong Gi-hun (Player 456), offering him guidance and emotional support throughout the harrowing competitions. He often uses his age to garner sympathy from other players.

However, a shocking twist reveals Il-nam to be the mastermind behind the Squid Game, having created it as a means of entertainment for himself and other wealthy elites. Bored with their immense wealth, they sought a thrilling spectacle where they could gamble on the lives of desperate individuals. Il-nam's participation as Player 001 was a way for him to relive his childhood games and experience a sense of camaraderie, albeit in a highly distorted and unethical manner.
